Following the report of Robert Francis QC into the scandal at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust, the NHS Commissioning Board has announced a widening inquiry into other NHS trusts that are ‘outliers’ on two different mortality indicators. Papers have written this up as if it’s certain this means these trusts have problems. They might. But the indicators are not the simple, flashing lights that it’s easy to suppose that they are.
